Next to buying a home, purchasing a vehicle is typically one of life’s biggest investments. Accessible vehicles play a vital role in enabling independence and facilitating daily travel for both drivers and wheelchair passengers. Ensuring the smooth operation of the van’s wheelchair ramp and other adaptive equipment is crucial for preventing repair issues and maximizing its accessibility over time.

Contact any of The Mobility Resource dealers to schedule a six-month preventative maintenance inspection with an NMEDA-certified technician. If there isn’t a dealer in your state, go to the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) website and look for Consumer Resources > Locate a Dealer.

NMEDA-certified technicians know what to look for when inspecting and adjusting the wheelchair ramp and other adaptive equipment installed on a van.

Expert Inspection for Your Accessible Vehicle

These specialized technicians are trained on the equipment installed by the conversion manufacturers, such as BraunAbility, and know what to look for when working on accessible vehicles. They will methodically go through a detailed checklist to ensure everything is working properly so you can travel safely with greater peace of mind. Below is a checklist suggested by NMEDA that many dealers will use with your inspection.

  1. Check overall operating condition, including any abnormal noises, binding, or grinding.
  2. Clean and lube ramp hinges.
  3. Check the tightness of ramp motor bolts, hinge bolts, and rivets.
  4. Lubricate ramp pivot pin and bushings.
  5. Inspect and lubricate the ramp drive arm.
  6. Operate ramp to ensure proper stow deploy switch adjustment.
  7. Verify manual operation of the ramp.
  8. Ensure drain holes are debris-free, then lubricate all door hinges and locks.
  9. Check door alignment and ensure correct operation.
  10. Check the sliding door harness for damage and proper operation.
  11. Inspect door operation cables and full-open switch.
  12. Test the battery.
  13. Check kneel system operation, and lubricate kneel chain and rollers.
  14. Verify the operation of conversion with all switches and remotes.
  15. Check and adjust tire pressure as posted on the “B” pillar.
  16. Vacuum and clean floors and ramp areas.
  17. Inspect and test either the transfer or the jump-seat operation.
  18. Check all wiring for proper routing and condition.
  19. Inspect and verify that all interior and external lighting is functioning properly

Keeping Your Accessible Vehicle Running Smoothly

Regardless of whether your accessible vehicle is new or old, scheduling regular maintenance check-ups is essential to safeguard your investment. You may also want to inquire about any ongoing “Maintenance Specials” at your local mobility dealer, potentially saving 10-20% on preventive maintenance appointments. By taking advantage of these offers, you not only prioritize the longevity of your accessible vehicle but also maximize cost-effectiveness in its upkeep.
