Planat is an accessibility app that was created by the Rick Hansen Foundation. The Rick Hansen Foundation is a charity that is committed to improving the lives of people with spinal cord injuries. Hansen himself was thrown from a truck on his way home from a fishing trip back in 1973. He sustained a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist up. Despite his disability, Hansen remained active in sports. He went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons, nine gold medals in the 1982 Pan American Wheelchair Games and was named “Canada’s Disabled Athlete” three times. Rick was even a torchbearer for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. His foundation has raised more than $245 million in investments for Spinal Cord Injury research and quality of life initiatives.

Planat lets users search and post reviews about building or facility accessibility. According to the site, the application “is based on a five-point rating system similar to consumer reviews found on travel websites.” Planat gives users the chance to rate accessibility features from a mobility, sight and hearing perspective. The application even has information about sites from around the globe.

Planat is fairly simple to use, and setting up an account is free. You can even login with your Facebook account if you prefer. Once you login, you can search venues by name, use GPS to find nearby venues or comment about a venue. Search results can be filtered by location, venue type and ratings. Reviews can also be searched based on your accessibility needs. So load up your wheelchair van and head for Vancouver, New York, Miami or wherever your next adventure is. Explore the country, or the world with planat.

Planat can be accessed through a desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone and Android 2.2 devices.
