Veterans, we appreciate your service and commitment to our country and we want to help you find a mobility solution that best meets your needs. We also want to help you find financial aid that could offset the costs of your vehicle. Did you know that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides funding for wheelchair accessible vans and adaptive equipment for vehicles to qualified veterans? Benefits are awarded according to the nature of your illness or disability.

Depending on your circumstances, you can fall under one of two categories:

Service-Connected Disability: A disability that resulted from, or was aggravated by an injury or illness during your active duty.

Non Service-Connected Disability: A disability that did not result from, or was aggravated by an injury or illness during your active duty.

If you have a service-connected disability, you may qualify for a one-time automobile grant through the VA. An approved VA Form 21-4502 that proves you are eligible to receive Automobile Adaptive Equipment (AAE) is required. To qualify for the grant, you must have one of the following disabilities:

  • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet
  • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands, or
  • permanent impairment of vision in both eyes to a certain degree

You can learn more about this grant on the VA Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service website.

The Automobile Adaptive Equipment program covers adaptive equipment costs to make vehicles accessible to veterans. This program will cover two vehicle modifications within a four-year period for service-connected veterans.

For non-service connected veterans, the program will only cover equipment or modifications to help you get in and out of your vehicle.
